As a mentor for students from St. Joseph's College of Engineering participating in a 2025 hackathon conducted at PSNA College of Engineering and Technology, I traveled with the team and worked alongside them for nearly two sleepless days to develop a data wiping application focused on secure deletion and privacy protection.
The experience went far beyond technical guidance — it demanded leadership under pressure, rapid problem-solving, and navigating the chaos that comes with tight deadlines and unexpected system failures at 3 AM.
The application centered around secure data wiping techniques, reinforcing the principle that deleting a file does not mean it is permanently erased. The hackathon environment tested endurance, focus, and teamwork.
The most valuable outcome was not just the product we built, but the resilience, clarity, and discipline that emerged through the process. Mentorship in that environment meant staying composed when code failed, helping the team prioritize effectively, and maintaining forward momentum despite exhaustion.
