Someone messages you: "Your website isn't loading." Your stomach drops. You try it yourself - spinning, then an error. Every minute it stays down, you are losing enquiries, sales, and a little bit of trust.

Take a breath. Most outages have one of five boring causes, and you can identify which one in about five minutes without any technical background. Work through these checks in order - each one takes a minute, and the order matters because it goes from most common to least.

Check 1: Is It Actually Down, or Just Down for You?

Wi-Fi glitches, office firewalls, and your own browser cache cause a surprising share of "outages".

Go to downforeveryoneorjustme.com or isitdownrightnow.com and enter your domain. Also try the site on your phone with Wi-Fi off, using mobile data.

If those tools say the site is up, the problem is on your end - restart your router, try another browser, clear cache. No emergency. If they confirm it is down for everyone, keep going.

Check 2: Is Your Hosting Provider Having Problems?

Before assuming you broke something, check whether your host did. Every major provider - Hostinger, GoDaddy, SiteGround, AWS, and the rest - has a status page; search "[your host] status". Check their X/Twitter account too, since status pages sometimes lag.

If there is a known outage, the honest answer is: wait, and note the incident time. Frustrating, but nothing you do will fix their data centre.

If their status is green, log in to your hosting control panel. Look for suspension notices - unpaid bills and resource-limit suspensions are two of the most common causes of small-business downtime, and hosts do not always email loudly about them.

Check 3: Did Your Domain Expire?

This one is embarrassing and extremely common. Domains renew yearly, the renewal card expired, the reminder emails went to an old address - and one day the domain lapses and the site vanishes.

Run your domain through a WHOIS lookup (who.is or lookup.icann.org) and check the expiry date. A telltale sign: the site shows a parking page full of ads instead of an error.

If it expired recently, renew immediately - most registrars have a grace period of days to weeks. Act fast: after the grace and redemption periods, the domain can be auctioned to strangers. While you are in the registrar, switch on auto-renew and update the billing card and contact email.

Check 4: Is It an SSL Certificate Problem?

If visitors see "Your connection is not private" or a security warning rather than a blank page, the site is up but the SSL certificate has expired or is misconfigured.

Confirm at ssllabs.com/ssltest or by clicking the padlock/site-info icon in the browser and viewing the certificate's expiry date.

Most modern hosts issue free Let's Encrypt certificates that auto-renew; the fix is usually one button in the hosting panel to reissue. If you bought a paid certificate a year ago, it likely expired - renew or switch to the host's free auto-renewing option so this never recurs.

Check 5: What Changed in the Last 48 Hours?

If the host is fine, the domain is live, and SSL is valid, the cause is almost always a recent change. A plugin update, a theme update, a new snippet of code, a DNS edit, a new integration.

Ask everyone with access - including your developer or agency - what was touched. On WordPress, a plugin conflict after an update is the single most common culprit; hosts can disable plugins from the control panel to test. If a DNS record was edited, changes take time to propagate and a wrong value can take the whole site with it.

If a change is the cause, the fastest route back is restoring the most recent backup from before the change, then redoing the change carefully.

Prevention: Never Find Out From a Customer Again

The worst part of this incident was probably how you learned about it. Fix that permanently in an afternoon.

Set up free uptime monitoring (UptimeRobot or similar) to ping your site every few minutes and alert your phone. Turn on auto-renew for domain and SSL, with a calendar reminder a month before domain expiry as a belt-and-braces check. Schedule automatic backups - daily for busy sites - stored somewhere other than the hosting account itself. And keep a one-page runbook: registrar login location, host support number, who to call.

This monitoring-and-backup baseline is part of every site we ship at Kentaurx web development, because uptime is a system, not luck.

When to Hand It Over

The five checks above solve the majority of outages without expert help, and the prevention list is genuinely DIY.

Escalate when the site keeps going down repeatedly, when the cause looks like a hack or malware, when downtime is costing real revenue per hour, or when nobody on the team knows the logins to even start the checklist. Recurring downtime is not bad luck - it is an architecture or maintenance problem, and patching it monthly costs more than fixing it once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check if my website is down for everyone or just me?

Enter your domain at downforeveryoneorjustme.com or isitdownrightnow.com, and try the site on your phone using mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. If it loads for others, the issue is your network or browser cache, not the site.

My domain expired and my website disappeared - can I get it back?

Usually yes, if you act quickly. Most registrars offer a grace period of days to weeks where you can renew at the normal price, followed by a costlier redemption period. After that the domain can be released or auctioned, so renew immediately.

Why does my site show "Your connection is not private"?

That warning means your SSL certificate has expired or is misconfigured - the server is running, but browsers refuse the insecure connection. Reissue or renew the certificate from your hosting panel; free Let's Encrypt certificates can be set to renew automatically.

How can I get alerted the moment my website goes down?

Use an uptime monitoring service such as UptimeRobot, Better Stack, or Pingdom. They ping your site every one to five minutes and alert you by email, SMS, or WhatsApp within moments of an outage - long before a customer tells you.
