The Shopify vs WooCommerce debate never really ends, because there is no single winner. There is only the right platform for your product, your budget, and how much you want to touch the machinery.
We build stores on both. Shopify for brands like By Kaveri, Divas Mantra and Silvorium. WooCommerce for stores like Ammi's Chutney. So this is not a fan post. It is what we tell clients before they spend a rupee.
Shopify is a subscription. You pay a predictable monthly fee, plus app subscriptions, plus transaction fees if you skip Shopify Payments. Costs are stable but they never go away.
WooCommerce is free software on hosting you pay for. Your real costs are hosting, a few premium plugins, and developer time. It can be cheaper to run, but the cost shows up in maintenance instead of a subscription line.
Rough math for India: a lean Shopify store runs around Rs 2,000 to 7,000 per month before apps. A WooCommerce store might run Rs 500 to 3,000 per month in hosting, but budget for periodic developer help.
Watch the app trap on both sides. Shopify apps at 10 to 30 dollars each add up quickly, and premium WooCommerce plugins carry annual renewals. Audit what you actually use every quarter.
Shopify is the easy one. Hosting, security, updates and PCI compliance are handled. You log in, you sell. The trade-off is that you play inside Shopify's walls, and some customisations require workarounds or paid apps.
WooCommerce gives you full control. It is WordPress, so you can change anything: checkout flow, database, pricing logic, integrations. The trade-off is that everything is your responsibility, including updates, backups and security patches.
If nobody on your team is technical and you have no developer partner, Shopify's guardrails are worth the money. If you have unusual requirements, WooCommerce bends further.
Both platforms handle India well now. Razorpay, PayU and Cashfree integrate cleanly with either, and UPI plus COD workflows are solved problems on both sides.
GST is where WooCommerce has a slight edge for complex cases. Plugins can handle HSN codes, GST-compliant invoices and state-wise tax rules with more flexibility. On Shopify you can absolutely run a GST-compliant store, but you will likely lean on an app for invoicing.
Shipping is a tie. Shiprocket, Delhivery and the other aggregators plug into both platforms without drama.
One more India note: if COD is a big part of your sales, both platforms support it, but the order verification and RTO-reduction tooling differs. Test that workflow before committing, not after.
Shopify scales effortlessly on the infrastructure side. A Diwali sale spike will not take your store down, and you never think about servers. Where it strains is cost: as you add apps and volume, the monthly bill climbs, and advanced customisation gets expensive.
WooCommerce scales as well as your hosting and your developer do. A well-built WooCommerce store on good infrastructure handles serious traffic. A neglected one falls over on your biggest sales day. Scaling here is a competence question, not a platform question.
Choose Shopify if: you want to launch fast, you sell fairly standard products, you have no technical team, and predictable monthly costs beat total control. Most D2C fashion, jewellery and lifestyle brands fit here.
Choose WooCommerce if: you already run on WordPress, you need custom checkout or pricing logic, you want to own your stack outright, or content and commerce are equally important to your business. Food brands, B2B stores and content-heavy sites often fit here.
And if you are still stuck, the tiebreaker is simple: who maintains it? With a reliable development partner, WooCommerce's flexibility is safe to use. Without one, Shopify protects you from yourself.
Migrating platforms later is doable but painful: URLs, SEO, customer accounts and order history all need careful handling. It is far cheaper to choose correctly the first time.
Our e-commerce development team builds and maintains stores on both platforms, so our recommendation is based on your business, not our preference. If you want the store to plug into a broader stack, we also handle WhatsApp automation for order updates and Google and Meta ads to drive traffic once you launch.
Pick the platform that matches your team, not the one with the loudest fans. Both can build a store that sells.
It can be, but only if you factor in maintenance. WooCommerce has lower fixed costs, while Shopify trades a monthly fee for zero server and security headaches.
Both work. WooCommerce plugins offer more flexibility for HSN codes and state-wise rules, while Shopify handles GST well with the right invoicing app.
Yes, migrations are common but need careful handling of URLs, SEO and customer data. It is cheaper to choose the right platform first.
Neither by default. We build on both and recommend based on your products, team, budget and customisation needs after a short discovery call.
